When Life Throws You a Curve Ball

When Life Throws You a Curve Ball

I planned on having today’s blog written and posted earlier but life (or a washing machine) decided to change those plans for me. I started a load of laundry with the intention to sit down and write my blog afterward. I put a few things in and went to gather more.

When I stepped back into the laundry room I was surprised by the sound of water splashing under my feet and the feeling as if I were wading in a kiddie pool.

The Power of Gratitude

The Power of Gratitude

“It is not joy that makes us grateful; it is gratitude that makes us joyful.”  - David Rast

Tomorrow we celebrate Thanksgiving here in the U.S. and I thought it was the perfect time to talk about gratitude.

The dictionary defines gratitude as: the state of being grateful; thankfulness.

Gratitude is simply an appreciation for what you have in your life.  It can be as simple as being thankful for the air you breathe.  I don’t know about you, but I tend to not even give that a second thought, yet without it, things would not be so wonderful.

Change Happens!

Change Happens!

Many of the great masters say that the key to happiness is being able to handle change. If you go with the flow and don’t judge things as good or bad, you will be at peace. I’ve been able to practice going with the flow and thought I was pretty good at it.  Then something changed that I wasn’t prepared for.  It came at me out of the blue and hit like a freight train.  I tried using all the spiritual, personal growth and positive self-talk I could come up with, but I was still struggling with this one.

What Do You Think?

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.”― Henry Ford

I love this quote and it has proven to be true in my life.  Every time I’ve attempted to do something and had an underlying thought such as:  “I’m not good enough”, “What makes me think I can do this?”, or “I don’t think I can do this”, I’ve been right.  I know we usually want to be “right”, but why not choose to be “right” about succeeding rather than failing.

Are You Stuck Up?

When I was in high school a boy asked me if I was stuck up because I was so quiet. He said it with such disdain that I remember in that moment making a decision to let everyone know that I didn’t like myself at all.

That decision affected my life in more ways than I could have imagined as a young girl. For years I would not even accept a compliment. When someone would compliment me I would say “That’s very sweet of you but I’m not _____."

The Greatest Gift

“The greatest gift you can give to someone is your time. Because when you give your time you are giving a portion of your life that you’ll never get back.” – Rick Warren I saw this quote after spending a weekend camping and celebrating my 50th birthday with my family. I was blessed with the greatest gift they could have ever given me, time spent together.

I knew we were going camping, but I wasn’t aware that it was to celebrate my birthday. My husband put it all together and my brother drove four hours and surprised me.  It was wonderful!

Disconnect In Order To Connect

With modern technology you can communicate quickly and instantly with people around the world.  This is a wonderful thing in many ways, but sometimes people are so connected to their devices that they aren’t truly present with the person they are with.

If you have a smart phone you now have your office with you at all times because you can check e-mails and be reached anytime of the day or night. It used to be that when you were done working for the day, that was it, and you didn’t check e-mails or do anything else until the next work day.

How To Receive Abundance In Your Life

Is there something you really want in your life? Are you open to receiving it?

You might be blocking yourself from receiving the abundance the Universe wants to give you, without even knowing it.

I used to have a difficult time accepting compliments. It may seem like something simple, but by not accepting even the simple, beautiful gifts from the Universe, I was saying “No thank you, I’m not ready to receive the gifts you have for me.”

How are you showing up?

Have you ever walked into a room where two people are upset with each other and you felt their energy without them saying a word? There’s the old saying “The air was so thick you could cut it with a knife.”  Even if they are trying to act like everything is okay, you can feel it.

The same thing happens when you are around people who are happy.  If someone starts laughing and gets the giggles, it's contagious. There have been many times I’ve gotten the giggles even if I didn’t know why someone else was laughing.

Are your feelings trying to tell you something?

Have you ever been so angry that you could feel the energy rising up in your body? Have you ever been so happy that you could feel the energy of pure joy rushing through your body?

Intense feelings can be overwhelming. If you judge the feeling as “bad” you may try to push it down because you’re afraid of the strong emotion or maybe you have a belief that it is “bad” to feel angry. The emotion is not “bad”, what can be harmful is how we choose to react to the feeling.

Pranayama to restore balance

I first learned about pranayama while working with an ayurvedic practitioner. Pranayama is breath work.  It is a Sanskrit word meaning “extension of the life force.” Alternate nostril breathing is a pranayama that I use often.  I always feel more relaxed and balanced afterwards.

Did you know that we don’t breathe equally through both nostrils? We tend to favor either the left or right nostril.  The left nostril is for calming and the right is for energy.
